For whom?

For anyone who travels with Dutch public transport - whether you do so infrequently or very often or whether you travel within your own region or all over the country.

Rates and availability

The first choice you have to make is whether you want to purchase a personal or anonymous OV chip card. We will explain the differences between the two below.

Personal OV chip card

  • You can load a discount product onto your card;
  • You can opt for automatic charging;
  • You can deactivate your card in the event of loss or theft.

You can purchase the personal OV chip card via www.ov-chipkaart.nl.

The personal and anonymous OV chip cards both cost € 7.50.

The rates for travelling with the OV chip card are found on www.9292.nl:

  • Plan a journey with the OV planner;
  • The costs of the journey are listed below the travel advice;
  • Click on all ticket types and select the cost of the journey with the OV chip card.
A personal OV chip card is linked to a specific card holder. When you use a personal OV chip card as a ticket, your identity has to match the one listed on the personal OV chip card. If the card requires a photograph, it must bear a clear resemblance to you. You cannot use someone else's personal OV chip card.

Anonymous OV chip card

  • Can be used by multiple people
  • No option to deactivate the card in the event of loss or theft
  • No option to automatically charge the card

The anonymous OV chip card is available from charge or sales points and from a variety of shops and service points in your region. You can find an overview of these locations via www.ov-chipkaart.nl/adresvinder.

The personal and anonymous OV chip cards both cost € 7.50.

Validity

The OV chip card allows you to travel by train, bus, metro and tram. The personal card is valid for a period of five years, while the anonymous OV chip card can be used for four to five years.

Your OV chip card only acts as a valid ticket if you checked in before starting your journey. Make sure you have sufficient credit on your card (at least €4 on the bus, at least €10 on the train). You can check in at the gate or the card reader. At the end of your trip, check out again at the gate or the card reader.

Forgetting to check out

You may sometimes forget to check out at the end of your journey. You can reclaim your credit in three simple steps via uitcheckgemist.nl.

You can reclaim credit in the following situations:

  • You forgot to check out.
  • You checked in with the wrong operator;
  • OV chip card check-in and -out posts on the platform were broken, so you were unable to check out;
  • OV chip card check-in and -out posts on the bus were broken, so you were unable to check out.

Additional information

If you fail to check in properly, your card does not act as a valid ticket. The ticket inspector may fine you for travelling without a valid ticket.
